Towards a Greener Mexico: Energytran and the Energy Transformation

From March 24 to 27, various cooperation activities took place in Mexico, focusing on the energy transition to advance the planet’s sustainability.

On March 26 and 27, 2025, the Technological Institute of Aguascalientes hosted the International Workshop Energytran, a workshop on energy transition within the framework of the Energytran Project for scientific cooperation between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean. The project is led by the OEI and funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe Program.

The workshop facilitated the exchange of knowledge and best practices on energy transition among 75 students, faculty, and researchers from Mexico, as well as representatives from other European and Latin American countries.

The inauguration was attended by:

  • José Luis Gil Vázquez, Director of the Technological Institute of Aguascalientes;
  • Josafa García Servín, Academic Deputy Director of the Institute;
  • Ana Claudia Morales Dueñas, General Director of the Aguascalientes State Institute of Science and Technology (Incytea);
  • Armando Ávila Moreno, President of the Aguascalientes Industrial Cluster (CLIA);
  • Paula Sánchez Carretero, Science Project Coordinator at OEI.

Among the key topics discussed in the working sessions were the progress and challenges of the energy transition and the mainstreaming of gender equality within it. Additionally, several contributions to the energy transition were showcased, such as:

  • The use of biomass for hydrogen production and advanced battery technologies in Coahuila, Mexico;
  • The industrial development of hydrogen and renewable derivatives in Magallanes, Chile;
  • The use of nanoparticles and nanofluids in concentrated solar energy processes in Costa Rica;
  • The need for research infrastructure for photovoltaic research in Spain.

Javier Arribas Quintana, Minister-Counselor for Sustainability and Energy Transition at the European Delegation in Mexico, participated in the event, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between Mexico, Ibero-America, and Europe to foster innovations that contribute to planetary sustainability.

During the two days prior to the workshop, two training courses were held along with the #EnergytranPoster Conference, an academic forum conducted via social media where 73 science, technology, and innovation projects were shared. Both initiatives aimed to promote and showcase innovative energy transition projects. The results of the International Workshop Energytran and the Poster Conference will be published on the project’s website in the coming weeks.

Energy Transition in Mexico

As part of the Energytran Project, visits took place on March 24 and 25, 2025, to explore and document experiences developed through the Ciudad Solar Program of the Government of Mexico City. Among the highlighted initiatives were:

  • Dängo, a craft brewery;
  • Carzuu, an exotic meat retailer;
  • Nutribuenas, a tortilla factory.

These businesses showcased the benefits of solar panel installations in their operations.

Additionally, the delegation visited the photovoltaic power plant at Mexico City’s Central de Abastos, which, with 30,000 installed solar panels, is the largest urban solar power plant in the world.

Representatives from EU-Solaris, the OEI General Secretariat, and OEI Mexico participated in these visits.
