Study Series EULAC Project for Energy Transition – Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile: The situation of the lithium industry

Lithium has gained undeniable relevance in the global context due to its central role in the transition towards electromobility and the fulfillment of carbon neutrality commitments. At a global level, public policies are focused on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with the transport sector being one of the main focal points of action. In Chile in particular, the National Electromobility Strategy establishes that from 2035 only 100% electric vehicles (EV) will be sold. In the United States, states such as California have implemented incentive programs focused on the penetration of zero-emission vehicles (ZEV). In Europe, there are mandates that only EVs will be sold by 2035, although some countries have proposed to advance this target to 2030. These policies underline the urgent need to ensure a constant and sustainable supply of lithium for the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries, the heart of electromobility, a mature and widely accepted technology to support this growth. https://s3.amazonaws.com/assets.energia.uc.cl/Situacion_de_la_Industria_del_Litio_VF_e3a7b6a7ab.pdf
